Fred Tropea's grandfather was a builder. His father was a framing contractor and finish carpenter, and his uncle was a masonry contractor. Although Fred worked for all three during school vacations, he chose to join an electrical contracting firm when he completed college in 1972. Two years later, he started his own electrical contracting company specializing in renovations and new home construction. The business was a success: it lasted 22 years until Tropea sold it in 1996.
